Shusha, you are free!

Author: Mehman Suleymanov

The book is a substantial research work that chronologically presents nearly three centuries of struggle, resistance and heroism in the city of Shusha. The author begins with the founding of Shusha by Panah Ali Khan in the 18th century and goes on to examine the Qajar invasions, the occupation by Tsarist Russia, the Karabakh battles of 1918-1920, the Soviet period and finally the tragic occupation in 1992, all supported by extensive archival evidence. The main narrative of the work highlights the historical events that emphasize Shusha’s strategic and cultural significance, its symbolic moral value for the Azerbaijani people and the bravery demonstrated against the enemy. The book is of particular importance both as a scholarly-fact-based study of Shusha’s past and as a chronicle of the struggle carried out for its liberation.
